This paper considers organ donation in the wider context of human behaviour rather than limiting its importance to the field of science and technology. The fondamental concepts analysed are: the gift, the importance of gift in social relations, and the questions raised about the 'free' nature of a gift; and cannibalism as incorporation. Cultural attitudes towards death and the body are also considered.
