The FAQs address the following areas of swissbib Basel Bern:

User account / My swissbib

The link to the log in page can be found on the top right, in the orange area of your page. Click on it and enter your user-ID and password.

Possible reasons include:

  • You are not registered and therefore do not have a user account.
  • You have used an outdated or wrong password.

If none of these reasons apply, please contact your library.

Your user account contains information about your loans, reservations, photocopying orders, outstanding fees and your postal address. You can also edit your saved library references, your saved searches, saved results lists and general settings.

Log into your user account, click on Checked out items. Now a complete list of items you have borrowed will appear. Next to each item a little box will appear on the right. Mark item you want to renew by clicking on the box Renew selected items to confirm your renewal.

Possible reasons include:

  • You have already renewed your loans five times and have to return them. If the item is not reserved, you can borrow the item again.
  • The item was requested by another person, so you will need to return it.
  • In the case of a interlibrary loan an extension must be requested, which cannot be guaranteed in all cases. Contact the library from where you borrowed the interlibrary loan. For items that you have borrowed from the UB Bern, use the renewal form on the UB Bern website.

Log in to your user account and choose Change address. Confirm your changes by clicking the Save button.

Choose Change password in your user account and follow the instructions.

You can sign up online or in a IDS library in Basel or Bern via this online form.

If you have a BibliOpass, you can have it linked to your library user-ID if you bring along official ID to the library.

Yes, your library user-ID is valid in all IDS or NEBIS libraries: IDS Basel Bern, IDS Luzern, NEBIS, IDS St. Gallen, St. Galler Bibliotheksnetz (SGBN) und Aargauer Bibliotheksnetz.

No, your student ID is also a library card. Your matriculation number can be used as library ID (without hyphenation).

No, your university staff card also works as your library ID: use the 6-digit number on your staff card (prefix for Basel MBS01, prefix for Bern BEM).

University staff in Bern need to have their account activated by one of the IDS libraries in Bern

If you show official ID at an IDS library in Basel or Bern you will receive a replacement card.

In order to access to your favourite libraries easier you can add them to My libraries.

When you are logged in and perform a search, the option Refine search will appear and at the top you will see My libraries. In your Locations & request list My libraries is distinguished by a filled in heart symbol . When logged into your account you can add libraries by navigating from My swissbib to My libraries and typing in the name of your favorite libraries.

Searching and finding information online

Under Books & more you will find primarily books, e-books, journals, e-journals, databases, CDs and DVDs. Usually the item will only be labelled with the title but will not indicate individual articles or chapters.

Under Articles & more on the other hand you will find individual articles or chapters from various e-journals, e-books and databases. For more information on how to find Articles & more refer to this video.

Enter the title of a book or related terms into the search box in the orange header of the page. Narrow your results list by using filters from the Refine search options on the right. For a step-by-step guide check out this video.

On the right side of your results list under Refine search there are different filters to help you narrow down your search: for example, if you are only looking for French materials, click on the Language filter French.

You can choose the preferred libraries from the Refine search option on the right or you canadd specific libraries to your My libraries list in My swissbib.

In Books & more narrow your list of results using the filter Available online from the Refine search filters by choosing your preferred library location. If your library does not appear no electronic media is licenced for your search topic. For free access to electronic ressources use the filter Free access Online.

In Articles & more there are two ways to access electronic media:

  • By clicking Get it, you can directly access the full text or PDF.
  • The support program SFX Services will take you directly to the SFX menu, where you can access the full text or PDF and also view ordering options.

Possible reasons include:

  • You have not accessed the network of the library that has copyright for this item.
  • You have not activated the VPN-Client (Basel or Bern) , which gives you access.
  • You are not a member of the network and can only access public items outside of the library. You can filter your results for Free Access Online under Refine search.

With the advanced search, you can combine search specifications, for example the title, author or subject, in one search.

Yes, click the symbol on the resultspage to save your search. You can recall your saved searches though Saved searches in My swissbib.

In order to save individual items, you can make a list in My swissbib by clicking the symbol at the item you wish to save and choosing a saved list. You can edit this list any time to add or delete items.

Yes, click the symbol in the results list. Now you can save the search for a particular subject and will be notified when new items become available in the catalogue that relates to that subject.

Yes, in My swissbib you will find the Settings. There you can customize and save the number of results shown on one page, the language setting and the search filters. Your personal customization will only be saved if you are logged in.

Either click on the results list or on the individual items and select the symbol to export your list of results.

Yes, click the citation symbol , now the bibliography indication for your chosen media will appear in two different citation styles.

You can fill out an order form (Basel, Bern) and then the library will handle the search. Ordering items will incure a fee.

You can also suggest items that your library should purchase. Fill in the purchasing form (Basel, Bern) and send it to your library.

  4. Now click on Order. If this option does not appear, it means that the item is not available electronically.
  5. Different libraries offer various pick-up and delivery options. You can find details on the website of the respective library.

Yes, as long as both libraries are linked by a common dispatch service:

  • The internal delivery service in Basel is free, and delivery takes one working day.
  • The internal delivery service in Bern is free. Please check our website for delivery times.
  • IDS delivery service operates between Aarau, Basel, Bern, Luzern, St.Gallen and Zurich. The dispatch costs 5 CHF, which you will need to pay in cash when you pick up the item. The item will arrive after two working days. If you want to order items from Luzern, St.Gallen or Zurich, you can order them through the swissbib CH catalogue. Instructions on how to order items can be found in our blog post.

Some libraries will send items to your home address.

  1. Choose the item you need under Locations and request of a library.
  2. If you are not logged in yet, click on Log in under the name of the library.
  3. Now click on Order. If this option does not appear, it means that the item is not available electronically. In this case, click on the symbol under the location name. There you will find the address and opening times of the library.
  4. Under Pickup / delivery location, choose Home address and then Order.

The cost of this service is CHF 12 per item.

Yes, as long as both libraries have the same delivery service: Basel, Bern, IDS delivery service.

The return of items is free.

  1. In Books and more, click on the item that you want photocopied sections of.
  2. For your chosen book, click on a library under Locations and request.
  3. If you are not logged in yet, click on Log in under the name of the library.
  4. Now click on Order a copy. If the option does not appear, it is not possible to order a photocopy electronically. In this case, click on the symbol under the location name. There you will find the address and opening hours of the library.
  5. Choose a type of delivery (by post or email) and indicate the authors/contributors, title, page numbers, year/volume in the respective boxes.

20 pages of photocopies cost CHF 5 for private customers and CHF 25 for corporate customers. The bill for this cost will be issued through the IDS Basel Bern. The order will be processed within 24 hours from Monday to Friday.

The cost and delivery time is not the same for every delivery service:

  • The internal delivery service in Basel is free, and delivery takes one working day.
  • The internal delivery service in Bern is free. Please check our website for delivery times.
  • The IDS delivery service runs between Basel, Bern, Luzern, St.Gallen and Zurich. One delivery costs 5 CHF, which you will need to pay in cash when you come to pick up your order. Delivery takes two working days.
  • Delivery to your home address will cost 12 CHF per item. Between Monday and Friday, the item(s) will be processed and sent off within 24 hours.
  • 20 pages of photocopies cost 5 CHF for private customers and 25 CHF for corporate customers. Between Monday and Friday, the item(s) will be processed within 24 hours.

The costs noted above only apply to the libraries of the University of Basel and Bern. You can find costs of other libraries on their respective websites.
